The good news is that Xerox makes it easy to integrate these technologies into your day to day operations and already-existing workflows. In today’s post, we’ll take a look at how to integrate an LDAP server with your Xerox VersaLink MFP—and it only takes about two minutes (seriously).
What is an LDAP Server?
LDAP, or Leightweight Directory Access Protocol, is a kind of server configuration. It can be thought of as similar to a giant phone book that holds data which can be classified and organized in a certain way. LDAP servers are best for storing data that is written once, and read many times. Meaning that the data isn’t changed very often, but is needed to be accessed frequently.
While LDAP is often used to store authentication data, it can be used for any other kind of data. The benefit to using LDAP is that it is a centralized data source and very fast.
How to Integrate an LDAP Server With a Xerox VersaLink Multifunction Printer
This video from the official Xerox support YouTube channel will show you in less than two minutes how to add your LDAP server information to your Xerox VersaLink MFP. It’s not a short video because the narrator is “zipping through” the instructions either—it’s actually just that easy to configure your VersaLink to use LDAP.
In a nutshell, all you have to do is visit your VersaLink control panel, log in as an administrator, and click the “connectivity” link. Once there, find the word “LDAP” under protocols and click on it. Then click “LDAP Servers/Directory Services” and enter in all the information required for your LDAP server.
At minimum, this requires an IP address and port number, though advanced settings are available if desired—such as the ability to set a root directory for searches, as well as your LDAP authentication credentials if required.
Once you’re done, click the “OK” button and that’s it—your LDAP server is now integrated with your VersaLink printer.
What About Other Xerox Machines, Like CentreWare Devices?
Xerox CentreWare devices can also interact with your LDAP server using the CentreWare Internet Services (CWIS) platform. The process is just as easy as integrating an LDAP server with a VersaLink device, however it is a bit different.
Once you’ve entered CWIS, you’ll visit the properties tab, click on “Connectivity,” and then in the following dropdown options, select “Setup.” Underneath “Protocol,” find the option for LDAP and click on it. Then click “Add New” and enter your server’s information.
