The Xerox Summarizer App is an AI-driven app for ConnectKey-enabled Xerox devices like your office MFP. The purpose of the app is to accept a document, which you may scan in or select from your local or cloud storage, and then to summarize it in a short-but-accurate manner:
You might be skeptical as to whether or not AI can properly summarize the key points of a document, but in our experiments, the app has been very impressive. A lot of that success is directly attributable to the two different kinds of summary you can choose to generate: extraction and abstraction summaries.
Understanding the Difference Between an Extraction Summary and an Abstraction Summary
The Xerox Summarizer App gives you the choice between two different styles of summary: extraction or abstraction.
An extraction summary pulls the most important bits from the text and cuts out the rest, effectively “extracting” the most important parts. In this style of summary, none of the language from the original text is changed, just removed. This is useful for documents where precise wording is important to preserve. The drawback is that sometimes the extractions won’t necessarily “flow” together well—because after all, the point is to get at the information you need fast.
Abstraction summaries are different in the sense that they can contain words and text that doesn’t appear in the original document but still communicates the same idea. For this reason, abstraction summaries tend to flow a little better and are generally nicer to read. However, abstraction summaries are currently only available in English, whereas extraction summaries can be in English as well as most standard European languages.
