There’s just something about handwritten notes, isn’t there?

Perhaps it’s because writing out a note by hand takes longer than typing, so we’re compelled to slow down and think a little bit more about what we’re writing. Or, on the other side of the coin, it’s often the case that in many cases jotting down a quick note is faster than pulling out your mobile device or laptop.

Whatever your reasoning, taking notes by hand is great… except for when you need to archive, review, or otherwise work on that content from a digital perspective (i.e., your computer). Sure, you can scan handwritten notes, but in years past, the only way to get them into an editable, easily-archived state was to transcribe them by manually typing everything out.

Fortunately, those days are over!

In today’s post, we’re going to take a look at Xerox’s latest AI-driven optical character recognition (OCR) technology for quickly and accurately digitizing handwritten notes: the Xerox Note Converter App.

Here’s how it works: you scan a handwritten note into your Xerox MFP as you normally would. Run the app, and it’ll transcribe everything for you into a digital document. You can choose how you want to save the document, such as to the printer’s local storage or to your cloud account. You can even have the document emailed directly to you or another recipient.

Once you have the document open on your computer or mobile device and open it up in your word processing software of choice, it works exactly the same as any other document.

How Accurate is the Note Converter App? What if I Have Notes in a Language Other Than English?

While no OCR technology is perfect (yet), the Xerox Note Converter app is very good. It works best with block-style print letters, so you’ll want to avoid fancy cursive as much as possible. It also has trouble picking up what you wrote if your original note was taken on something with a complicated background, such as a picture, complex grid, or other non-standard pattern.

As for the app’s language capabilities, it can convert not only your English notes, but also handwritten notes taken in up to 19 other languages.
