Xerox multifunction printers are powerhouses of reliability. While some of the moving parts may need to be repaired or replaced over the years, generally speaking these machines are absolute tanks that will last as long as you’re willing to maintain them—in other words, they’re a good investment in the longevity of your office equipment.

However, the consumables that must always be replaced are of course paper and toner. Any office accountant is always likely to be interested in reducing the cost of toner, so the good news is that there are many great ways to do so. But is switching to a third-party toner brand one of those solutions?

In today’s post, we’ll take a look at a study commissioned by Xerox to discover how their toner stood up to the competition. After that, we’ll examine a unique and fun way to further cut back on toner and paper usage to reduce waste and costs.

The Difference Between Genuine Xerox Toner and Third-Party Toners

Xerox commissioned a company called SpencerLab to test the quality of their first-party Xerox brand toner and compare it with third-party brands. Since third-party brands often market themselves as more affordable alternatives, Xerox wanted to know if this was actually true, and so an impartial outside testing company was brought in to find out.

Here are the results:

Want to Save Money on Toner? This Study Compared Genuine Xerox Toner vs. Third-Party Toners... And The Results Are Surprising!

As you can see, the Xerox brand toner outperformed all three competition brands in every single milestone. Not only did the Xerox toner produce the most high quality prints for the longest period of time, it also didn’t result in many common printing problems, like ghosting, banding, streaking, or distortion. This test wasn’t just for a few sheets of paper either: the Xerox toner’s test ran for over 80,000 sheets.

What can we learn from this? Xerox brand toner is the best option you have for saving money on toner—it lasts longer and has fewer problems than the competition. You can read the full SpencerLabs study here to see for yourself.

Having said there, there are a few other ways you can reduce printer waste to save money on both paper and toner. Let’s take a look at a couple of them.

Reducing Printer Waste With the Xerox Print Awareness Tool

Recently on the blog we discussed the Xerox Print Awareness Tool in our post Reduce Costs and Printer Waste With the Xerox Print Awareness Tool. This tool really is a great way to reduce paper and toner usage in nearly any kind of workplace—thanks to a unique “gamification” system, this tool incentivizes staff to have more positive print behaviors.

While the previously mentioned post explains how the Xerox Print Awareness works in detail, here’s the process in a nutshell: the tool shows administrators a graphical breakdown of their office’s print usage, including for individual employees (if you’re a fan of charts and graphs, you’ll love this). Staff members can accrue points which represent real-world cost savings and sustainability improvements. It works so well because everyone wants to help and see how much they can conserve, both for the company budget and for the environment.
